SCFCU Will NEVER Ask You For That! 5 Red Flags of an Impersonation Scam

In an era of constant digital communication, Impersonation Scams have become increasingly sophisticated. These Scams occur when a criminal poses as a trusted institution, like your credit union, a government agency, or a well-known utility company, to gain access to your private information.

At St. Cloud Financial Credit Union (SCFCU), our priority is the security of everyone of our members. We believe that education is the strongest defense against financial fraud. By understanding how these criminals operate and recognizing the common red flags, you can proactively protect your accounts and your identity.

Protect Your Boundaries: Information SCFCU Will Never Request

One of the easiest ways to spot a scam is to know what a legitimate financial institution will and will not ask of you. While we may contact you regarding suspicious activity on your account, there are specific boundaries we will never cross.

SCFCU will never call, email, or text you to request the following:

  • Your Online Banking Credentials: We will never ask for your username or password.

  • Your Full Social Security Number (SSN): We do not need you to provide your full SSN over an unsolicited call.

  • Personal PINs: Your Personal Identification Number is for your use only; we will never ask for it.

  • Full Credit or Debit Card Numbers: We will never ask you to read your full card number over the phone.

  • Account or Balance Information: We will not call you to ask how much money is in your account.

  • Sensitive Personal Details: We will not ask for your address or the names of other individuals on your account in an unsolicited manner.

If you receive a request for any of the above, stop. It is a major red flag and we ask that you call SCFCU right away to verify.

5 Red Flags of a Phishing or Impersonation Attempt

Scammers rely on psychology to trick people into giving up their data. Watch out for these five common tactics:

  1. A False Sense of Urgency: Scammers often claim there is an "emergency" with your account that requires immediate action. They want you to panic so you act before you think.

  2. Scare Tactics: You may be threatened with account closure, legal action, or even arrest if you do not comply with their requests.

  3. Spoofed Caller ID: Do not rely on your phone’s caller ID. Technology allows criminals to make a call appear to come from a local area code or even SCFCU's official number.

  4. Suspicious Links and Attachments: Phishing emails often contain links to "verify your account" or attachments that claim to be "invoice details." Never click or open these from unknown sources.

  5. Requests to "Think Fast": If the caller discourages you from hanging up to verify the call through an official channel, they are likely trying to keep you on the line to complete the scam.
